Removable knife scales how to Media

Published: 7 years ago

One of the many questions I get is how I attach my scales and how the process works.
Rundown
Starting off with a slab of g10 I clamp it to my knife and using a 1/4 inch bit put a dimple in the scale. Next I drill through the g10 with an 11/64 bit that is just larger than the shaft diameter on the screw. With loose pressure the g10 centers itself in the dimple. Next I flip the slab over and using a pilot point bit drill down deep enough to cover the head of the screw. I use a 5/16 to clear the head of the screw. Once the depth is correct I flip the g10 over and using a 9/32 pilot point bit I drill a recess in the scale to sit the aluminum standoff in. This is to add strength as the screw tension isn't all that's holding the scales in place. Below are links to a standard size screw and aluminum standoff that I use. This will get you in the ballpark but you will need to take measurements to ensure you order the correct length of standoff and shaft length.
