What do you get when you lift a Porsche Cayenne shove huge tires underneath it and go out to the desert with a bunch of off-road hooligans? A great time and epic trip is what! My buddies over at Salty Gears Off-Road were sponsoring the Southern UT Gambler 500 so I asked if they had a rig I could take out and drive the event with. They handed me the keys to a 2006 Porsche Cayenne with a turbo charged V-8! In true Gambler spirit this monster rig was not as nice as it looked with leaking coolant, broken wipers, crazy alignment, and an entire dash looking like a Christmas tree with warning lights, but thats how we like our rigs around here. Me and Jamie saddled up for a great weekend of exploration and incredible scenery.
The Gambler 500 is a public land clean up. There are Gambler 500 events all over the United States and each one is it's own unique party with the theme being hooptie cars, and public land clean up. This particular event was a poker run to boot! Since me and Jamie were driving a rig from the sponsor we couldn't win any of the prizes but we could hit all 52 check points on the map. After plotting out all the points we realized this would be impossible given the time we had so we settled on each picking 5 rad locations to collect cards from and then playing our hand against each other for a Rock 'em Sock 'em robot set. The stakes were high to say the least so we set out across 4 states and hundreds of miles to claim our prize.
In Mexican Hat UT we ran into some fellow Gamblers who had rolled their rig so we set our goals to the side and helped them recover and get the hospital. Luckily everyone was okay and it seemed their car was going to get them back home just shy a few windows. Once we got the clear from the doctor that they were good me and Jamie got back to the work at hand. After some late driving and challenging terrain we finally ended up at our end point in Moab with a car and roof rack full of trash.
Hope you enjoy the journey!
