Cutlass style blades were often favored for naval engagements. The short heavy blade designs were useful for brutal hacking at close quarters such as during boarding operations. Sometimes, the Scottish Basket Hilt guard was added to the cutlass for better hand protection and to smash with. The Scottish Cutlass design was ideal when there was no maneuvering room for traditional dueling footwork.
