Spyderco Sharpmaker Review (Plus Meyerco Sovereign, Elk Ridge Caper)

Published: 10 years ago

The Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker is one of the best sharpening systems for a moderate price (around $55), and easiest to learn and use. In this video, I summarize the basic instructions that come with the system and show some quick results. The knives shown are an Elk Ridge ER-261 Caper Knife and a Meyerco Sovereign Folder, Clip Point model. I purposely chose inexpensive knives not known for being sharp. The Spyderco Sharpmaker easily made these knives perform like much more expensive knives would, out of the box. The Elk Ridge knife would not cut paper when I first got it, but after 2 passes on my Work Sharp (to knock down the bevel) and then 200 passes on the Sharpmaker, it is extremely sharp.

The combination of a Work Sharp Sharpener (about $65) and a Spyderco Sharpmaker (about $55) can pretty much give you a system to solve most sharpening problems. A strop would also be a good addition.
