A typical multitool has four slots reserved for the longer tools, but there are five long tools that people often want on their multitool; primary blade, serrated blade, wood saw, metal file, and scissors. Much of the major differences we see between multitools on the market today boil down to how each manufacturer resolves the Four Slots Problems. In this video, I look at some of the most common ways manufacturers resolve the issue.

Solution 1: Combine two tools into one, such as a combo-edge blade.
Drawback: Worst of both worlds.

Solution 2: Leave off the least-used or most costly of the five tools.
Drawback: “Pocket Tool Chest” no longer complete.

Solution 3: Shrink one of the long tools to fit in a short slot.
Drawback: Smaller tool has reduced size, strength, and reach.

Solution 4: Use a tool exchanger to switch two tools in and out.
Drawback: Less convenient to carry an extra piece and take time to switch it.

Solution 5: Add two more long slots.
Drawback: Tools becomes thicker, won't work with some locks.
