Knife Review: Spyderco Ulize - Elegant Tactical

The Spyderco Ulize... for me it was love at first sight. It has elegant lines that just turn me on, its shape is reminiscent of some of my favorite traditional Filipino weapons and looks uncannily like a few knives I've doodled in the margins of my legal pads while on the phone at work. Being a Spyderco—and all that that implies—was definitely icing on the cake for me. After the sticker shock wore off (I rarely pay over $100 for a knife... not by choice) I was determined to have one for myself. Now that I have one I can say it is all I hoped it would be and more.

Designed by German knife maker Ulrich Hennicke for German Police, the Ulize is another awesome Spyderco/Custom collaboration and, in my opinion, should be part of its ethnic series—not for its German origins but for its (unofficial) Filipino design references.

The Ulize features a gorgeous 4.11" hollow-ground, recurved VG-10 blade set at a very pleasing angle to its G-10 handle, optimizing its slashing capabilities and allowing the wrist to maintain a more natural posture when straight thrusting. With its integral finger guard and gentle pistol grip curve the Ulize's handle is also a thing of beauty. It is built on skeletonized stainless steel liners, has a four-position clip, a stout back lock and no lanyard hole.

At 4.8 oz and 3/8" thick this elegant and wicked knife makes an ideal stash and forget backup or self-defense weapon. And though it goes without saying, I'll say it anyway, the fit and finish on the beautiful Spyderco Ulize is magnificent.
