The Spyderco Matriarch 2: Hell-bent on Mayhem

The Spyderco Matriarch 2 is a purpose-driven, cold-hearted bitch hell-bent on mayhem. Derived from the larger, legendary Spyderco Civilian, the fully serrated, hollow ground, s-curved VG10 Matriarch 2 blade is engineered for nothing more pleasant than the untrained, adrenaline-fueled, gross-motor clawing and slashing of the sucker who pushes you to it. They'll wish they stayed away. This knife does not do double duty, cutting string, opening boxes or peeling apples—even Spyderco recommends you leave this one tucked away until your day becomes life or death. The Matriarch's blade would no doubt leave the most ghastly of wounds if drawn, even casually, through another human's flesh. Deep, jagged, difficult to stitch and impossible to scrub from your mind's eye. By all standards the Spyderco Matriarch 2 would be a foul and odious implement... if it weren't so damned beautiful!
The Matriarch 2 is built on the familiar Endura 4 platform, so the handle lock and materials are all the same. Like the Endura 4, it is fully ambidextrous, carries very well, is quite light and thin and deploys like a dream. Like most of us, I am not one who finds himself slashing his way out of difficult situations so this is more of a collection piece. And if thrusting works heavily into your defensive knife training, the Matriarch 2 may not be the ideal choice for defensive carry. In a high-stress situation when you turn off your brain and count on muscle memory to do the fighting for you, you do not want be wasting time with thrusts thrown in vain at a dangerous assailant. The carriage of this one may also be difficult to explain to the police or judge... but damn, what a sweet knife!
