Direware Solo V4 Guest Blade: Finely Crafted Manly Desk Jewelry

Published: 10 years ago

Here's my review of the Direware Solo V4, by Eric Tullis. This is a knife genre not normally seen on TheApostleP channel, and frankly, it's a bit outside my wheelhouse. However, there is a reason for that, aside from the cost of blades like this -- I'm generally not a fan of knives without a useful purpose as real tools.

The Solo V4 falls into a relatively new category of folding knives, the "over-built tactical" category. In general, knives of this type are in reality neither overbuilt nor tactical. They are mean looking and heavy, but in reality, no knife is stronger than its weakest point, so most of the weight is wasted, and with a $1,700 price tag (secondary market pricing -- direct from mfr. they're $600-800), very few people will actually use if for any tactical purpose, at least not one of "hard use".

All that aside, the Direware Solo V4 is a finely crafted piece of knife art. The grinds are very well-executed, and the machining and materials are first rate. As a statement of creativity and skill, it's a very admirable piece. It's operation and ergonomics aren't optimal, but again, this isn't a user. All in all, for what it is, it's a very cool blade, but as for me, a guest blade review is probably as close as I'll come to a knife like this.
