FSB -- Medford 187RMP: Poster Child for "Over Built" Insanity

Published: 9 years ago

Here's a look at a price leader from Medford Knife and Tool, the 187RMP. Billed and marketed as a budget priced EDC blade, the 187 series is clearly aimed at the market segment whose budgets won't bear the cost of a $600-1,000 custom knife, but who drool at the "over built" cartoon blades from Greg Medford, based on a very effective marketing strategy.

But at over 5 ounces and nearly 5/8" thick in pocket, it's not exactly EDC friendly. Neither is it friendly in hand, as one searches for a grip on the 187RMP that affords some degree of comfort and control. The budget Medford also exhibits dangerously early lockup and slow, cumbersome deployment.

On the plus side, the 187RMP is ground thinly enough for good cutting, and has a pocket clip that's both effective and attractive.

Overall, the 187RMP is a poorly engineered hunk of pocket jewelry tailor made for the modern mall ninja... for only $425.
