The Escape Button is a concept created by Tomas Alas of Tactical Tavern and brought to life in collaboration with Shomer-Tec. It hides a fold-out serrated blade inside a standard mil-spec BDU button, giving you a discreet everyday carry survival tool that can remain on your clothing even when everything else has been taken.

Why The Escape Button Exists
Zip ties and flex cuffs are among the most common initial restraints used in abductions and unlawful detainment. In many real-world scenarios, victims are stripped of their phone, wallet, keys, and knives.
But buttons rarely get searched.
That insight led to the creation of the Escape Button, a tool designed to remain concealed, accessible, and ready when you need it most.
This concept was inspired by true crime awareness and the question:
What if someone had a hidden tool that could cut them free when everything else was taken?
Escape Button Specifications
• Mil-Spec 3/4” BDU Button
• 1095 High Carbon Steel Blade
• Blackened for corrosion resistance and concealability
• Serrated edge for increased cutting efficiency
• Chisel grind for aggressive slicing performance
• Weight: approximately 0.05 ounces
• Available colors: Black, Tan, and Olive Drab
The blade deploys using a nail nick or friction catch, and the button housing acts as a handle for improved grip and control.
What The Escape Button Can Cut
This tool was designed specifically to defeat non-metal restraints, including:
• Zip ties
• Flex cuffs
• Rope (natural or synthetic)
• Paracord
• Duct tape
• Plastic packaging
• Fabric and cordage
Everyday Carry & Survival Uses
While designed primarily as an escape and evasion tool, the Escape Button can also function as a backup EDC blade for emergency situations.
Possible uses include:
• Cutting a seatbelt after a vehicle accident
• Creating improvised medical gear such as a tourniquet or chest seal
• Opening packaging or cordage
• Cutting fishing line or vines
• Feather sticking for fire starting
• Striking a ferro rod with the 90° spine
For outdoor survival, preparedness, and everyday carry, it provides a discreet last-ditch cutting tool that is always on your person.
Concealment & Carry
One of the biggest advantages of the Escape Button is how well it hides in plain sight.
It can be sewn into or attached to:
• Shirts
• Pants
• Waistbands
• Jacket cuffs
• Fabric tags
• Bras or undergarments
• Hats or beanies
• Survival sewing kits
Because it looks like a normal clothing button, it passes visual inspection easily and blends into everyday garments.
Testing also showed it has less metal signature than many standard clothing buttons, helping maintain a low profile.

The Escape Button was designed with input and research from law enforcement professionals, corrections officers, and counter-custody experts.
Key design goals included:
• Search-proof concealability
• One-handed deployment
• Minimal metal signature
• Maximum cutting ability in a micro blade
This tool is intended to increase the odds of survival during unlawful restraint situations, especially when conventional gear is unavailable.
Self Defense Disclaimer
While the Escape Button can function as a last-ditch self-defense tool, it is primarily designed for escape and survival purposes.
