The Golden Twenties, a Grand Hotel, and Two Knives

Published: 13 years ago

This video starts with two knives - but it is not a knife review. This video is a kind of historical documentary that is dedicated to one of the most legendary grand hotels of the Golden Twenties, the "Hotel Excelsior" in Berlin.

The "Excelsior" was the largest and the most modern hotel of the continent at that time. By following the history of two giveaway knives and some other rare collectibles from the "Excelsior", I try to reveal the heart and soul of the 1920s era which marked the zenith of the grand hotels in Europe.

As we all know today, the Golden Twenties were a dance on a volcano. It all ended with Hitler's rise to power in 1933 which marked the beginning of the darkest chapter in the history of Germany. In this video I also tell the story of the hotel owner Curt Elschner, a self-made man, who first rejected to make the "Excelsior" a base for Hitler in Berlin, but later regretted his decision when the Nazis became more powerful.

Many thanks to fellow German YouTuber formiggini who collects the great tunes from the 20s. He allowed me to use some of his recordings. Check out his channel:

I used these three Efim Schachmeister tunes in my video:

Efim Schachmeister and his orchestra played a long engagement at the "Excelsior" in the 1920s.
