Repairing large chip in Damascus steel knife blade.
Published: 2 years ago
I found this Civivi Odium knife in the $8 bin at the Texas State Surplus Store, where they have knives surrendered to TSA from airports around Texas. The Damascus steel on this thing looks great, but the blade had a pretty good chip near the tip. Ordinarily I would grind material from the spine side and re-profile the tip of the knife, keeping a thin edge behind the tip. But the spine is black from the Damascus process and a shiny grind there would have been conspicuous, so I ground from the edge. Yes, this is terrible for the grindstone, but I have a very cheap, coarse grindstone that I bought specifically to abuse. Further sharpening and material removal on the Work Sharp Ken Onion edition sharpener got it back to a respectable edge.
