Hedonic Adaptation and You: Why your collection is never quite complete

After a delightful comment from a viewer, I'm spurred to discuss a fact of life in collecting knives, pens, wine, watches, cars, houses, or even spouses: You're on the Hedonic Treadmill, and you're not getting off any time soon.
Your standards will rise, "perfect" will cease being perfect, and as you find better, you'll expect better. That's OK, and leads me to a great deal of fun, but it's important to appreciate what you've got!
