Nick's Guide to Knife Safety

Today, a few quick guidelines for using, handling, and maintaining knives safely. Likely no news for folks who've been in the hobby for a while, but maybe helpful for the newbies!

Here's the list as text:

Usage:

1) Never cut towards yourself, your hand, or anything you don't want cut open
2) Always cut on a steady surface
3) Use your knife as a cutting tool only
4) Use the right knife for the job
5) Use a quality knife

Handling:

6) Only hand people knives that are sheathed or closed
6a) ... or set them down first
7) Don't walk or run with an open knife
8) Ship and store knives carefully
9) Learn "tricks" with a dull blade

Maintenance:

10) Keep your knife sharp
11) Be careful with freshly sharpened or lubricated blades
11a) Tell people if you've just sharpened a knife
12) Don't mess with locking mechanisms
13) Never use a knife with a failing lock

Preparation:

14) Learn how to treat basic knife injuries
15) Keep the needed supplies around
16) Have a plan for bad cuts
