Military “Pistol Sword” of the 1830s
Published: 10 months ago
This is the Morris Cutlass Pistol, a reproduction of an interesting weapon of the past made by Michael Morris.
Cutlass pistols popped up around the time when Bowie Knives were popular (earlier 1800s). Though quite bizarre, they made sense. Muzzle-loaded pistol provided one shot. If one were to miss thier enemy, behold- a back up knife!
The Elgin cutlass-pistol served as the first percussion handgun adopted by the US Military, uniquely standing as the sole combination firearm ever provided to American military personnel.
The knifemaker, Michael Morris won the Discovery Show “Master of Arms” with one of his renditions of the Cutlass pistol in 2018. To see more USA-made knives from this maker, you can check out his work at michaelmorrisknives.com.
