The Al-Mar SERE Operator (made by TOPS) is basically a modern version of a classic military knife that’s been around for over 40 years. It’s a It’s made in the USA by TOPS Knives and built to be tough - it’s smaller than other SERE knives I’ve handled before, but I prefer this more compact design as it’s a bit more concealable and comfortable in my hand.

It’s got a 4-inch talon-style blade made from 154CM steel that was able to mostly hammer a nail in half with limited edge damage. It’s also decently lightweight (about 4.5 oz), so it feels fast in the hand. I like the sheath retention and the sheath clip construction, but I don’t like how you can’t remove the sheath clip because it forces you to carry drop leg or across the waist and you cannot orient it scout carry.

The slim G10 handle has hollow lashing screws which reduce weight and make the balance feel pretty good, I feel like this knife is very comfortable and forward and reverse grip and I like the strategically placed jimping on the handle and blade.

600 of these were made, and the first 500 are numbered—so if you want one, don’t wait too long.
