A Rolling Knife Sharpener?

Published: 2 weeks ago

I Became aware of “Rolling Sharpeners” through TikTok a year ago which at the time was loaded with cheaper knock off versions of the one in this video, the German-Made HORL. At Blade Show Atlanta last June, HORL had a booth, and I got to check out their sharpeners in person.

At first, they seemed kind of too good to be true, but after getting one myself, I am pleasantly surprised with how user-friendly they are and how smooth the Sharpening System is. Using them is simple and great for people like me who are not whetstone savvy. You will not get a Whetstone edge with this, but it can still get razor sharp.

Before obtaining one, I had done a bit of research online and read many good things about them. Though they are not ideal for profiling, they are fantastic for edge touchups, and can get an absolute razor on your knife. You could re-profile with them. It would just take forever because the grit provided with the sharpener is fine.

Pros:
-takes 5 seconds to set up
-strong magnet holds knife, securely in place for continued angle
-very compact
-Longer lasting than whetstone
-Very beginner-friendly, easy to use
-Made in Germany, feels luxurious and high-quality, stylish
-less frustrating than other sharpening systems I have used
-Superior to a pull through sharpener
-leaves a nice mirror polish

Cons
-Expensive
-limited angle range of 15° or 20°
-limited grit plates with base model
-knife with bolsters will be harder to use with the system system
-to sharpen wider knives, it is necessary to add a block underneath so the roller reaches the edge
-Special attention needs to be taken when sharpening the tip of the knife
-Can be dangerous as the edge is faced upward

This one is on the upper scale of 179 but HORL also offers other similar models for $99. I’ve watched videos comparing cheaper, knock off versions with the more expensive versions and they do not hold a candle so I would probably invest in the pricier one myself (granted I was given this as a free sample).
