THE HUMMINGBIRD
The Hummingbird is a concept by Master Bladesmith Jason Knight. It is a compact, amazingly convenient fixed-blade knife that captures my coveted hand-forged design style, spirit, and functionality. Measuring only 5.26 inches (133.5 mm) overall, it is precision machined from AUS-10 stainless steel to provide an excellent balance of edge holding, corrosion resistance, and ease of sharpening. The legal-friendly 2.40-inch (61mm) blade showcases my signature sharkfin-clip profile and a full-flat grind that ensures an exceptionally keen edge and low-friction cutting performance.
I'm usually known for big knives but when I started taking The Hummingbird to knife shows in order to get feedback I was blown away by the positive response. People over and over again wanted to purchase the sample prototype, and everyone loved the size and versatility of the Hummingbird. Following is a breakdown of the materials we have chosen for the Hummingbird.
AUS-10A Blade Steel
High level of hardness makes it capable of taking on rough use
Despite being very hard, AUS10A steel knives are still easy to sharpen
High machinability makes it an attractive option for custom knife making
Rust-resistant so maintenance is relatively easy
AUS10A blades can get very sharp and can stay that way for a long time
Suitable for use with food
Rated at 58-60HRc in the Rockwell scale for the knife nerds :)
Dark Stonewash Finish
The Hummingbird comes with a dark stonewash finish. Blades with a stonewash finish have a rustic yet fine, high-quality surface created by means of controlled scratching. The blade is essentially washed inside a drum containing different types of media or stones which are scraping and falling on the blade in order to create the desired effect. The advantage of this purposefully created look is a heightened resistance to scratches and signs of wear and tear. On a polished blade, such flaws would be rather conspicuous, marring the overall appearance of the knife. For daily use knives this has become one of the most popular finishes in the knife industry.
G-10 Handle Material
G-10 is a high-pressure fiberglass laminate that can be used in things such as knife handles, boating applications, printed circuit boards, Insulators, jigs and fixtures. It is created by stacking multiple layers of glass cloth into a soaking epoxy resin. It is one of the toughest glass fiber laminates out there to date. This is why it’s so popular to work with. This material has a super high strength that stops it from bending or breaking under load. It doesn’t absorb moisture even when exposed over time and oil doesn’t bother the G10 material. These are some extremely strong and desirable properties for knives, and therefore it is one of the most popular knife materials being used today.
Its full-tang handle is flanked by peel-ply-textured G-10 scales for superior strength and balance. The scales follow the gently curved profile of the handle to provide a secure, comfortable three-finger grip and are secured to the tang with Torx® screws. For users who prefer the additional control offered by a fob or a lanyard, the butt end of the handle also includes a generously sized lanyard hole. The entire blade and all exposed tang areas feature a handsome black stonewashed finish.
To allow comfortable, convenient carry, the Hummingbird comes equipped with an injection-molded polymer sheath. The snap-fit sheath holds the knife securely and includes a versatile, quick-release belt mount easily configured for your preferred carry style. The mount is also adjustable to accommodate different belt widths. A whole host of clips can also be attached to the sheath as the eyelets spacing is industry standard.
The Hummingbird is a distinctly different approach to the everyday carry utility knife, reflecting my signature style and deep understanding of functional knife design. It will be available in two versions—one with black G-10 scales and one with green G-10 scales.
