Spyderco Manix 2XL in M4: Cut Test: Mine sucks and I'm sad (Knife Content)
Published: 3 years ago
Well, this is my first experience with a Spyderco that isn't cutting like I've expected. I did my standard 3/8" twisted sisal rope cutting and checking to slice through standard paper.
It's been sharpened on my Work Sharp Ken Onion with blade grinding attachment to 15 degrees all the way through the belts and finished on leather with diamond compound.
First cutting attempt was halted when I made it through 50 cuts before it would reliably snag on paper. So, I sharpened it again to the same specs I did before, and as shown in the video, it also fails at 50 cuts.
I'm thinking that 15 degrees might be too steep for this M4, so I'm going to try to increase the angle to 17 degrees (where I usually sharpen D2 & 14C28N), to see if having more meat behind the edge will remedy this.
Overall, every company will occasionally have a knife or two slip out the door that doesn't perform well. This one just happens to perform somewhere around 5Cr15MoV which sucks...
