Foresail DC53: Review & Teardown (Knife Content)

Published: 3 years ago

This is the knife I purchased due to the steel used. As I had mentioned earlier, DC53 is an offshoot of D2 steel and was kind of used as the baseline that was altered and particalized for CRU-WEAR.

The design itself isn't anything to write home about. It's the straight Japanese tanto-style blade that's been made popular from the Kwaiken, CEO and Shark from other manufacturers. It's a shape that a lot of Chinese makers use as it's easy and decently popular.

It runs into the same road trap that many others do in that making the handle as thin profile as possible, the blade is too close to the back of the handle when closed, so the blade isn't protected well enough from outside objects, including finger meat.

It's got several other questionable design choices that I go over in the video. All of that to say, I didn't necessarily purchase this knife for its design, more or less the steel. I've sharpened it up and it did take a bit more effort than usual D2 or 14C28N, so the hardness is probably pretty decent. We'll have to see how the cut test goes when I get around to it.
