TwoSun is Utilizing D2 for Many New Models. Thoughts?
Published: 2 years ago
The thumbnail here are all new TwoSuns that are being produced in D2 steel. I'll admit I cheated with the TS301 Lockdown and the TS216 Lovebird as the ones I have are in 14C28N, but newer variants being produced are all D2.
It seems as though TwoSun is moving back to using D2 a lot more. I think it's due to the amount of people complaining about how easily 14C28N scratches, even from the factory, and stonewashing is time-consuming, thus costs money.
I don't know in what capacity he has information over us, but Jelly Jerry did confirm this from a recent Facebook group discussion on it.
I'm more or less curious on people's thoughts on this. From my experience, their D2 performs quite well, beating out their 14C28N by a little bit. But it's also a steel that everyone and their mother is producing on the lower end these days, it's only semi-stainless and is viewed as a commodity that doesn't set your product apart.
My thoughts are that this isn't a bad interim to prevent a lot of scratched returns, but I do think that it'd be nice for them to move on to a different default steel.
My assumption is that they wouldn't use an American steel for their default, due to the high tariffs in our trade with them. They do use a little bit of S90V and S110V, but they're the exception to the rule. If they had a plan to do so, I'm sure they would have moved over to 154CM or S35VN like a lot of other producers have done.
Since they use Bohler's M390 and a touch of M398, N690 is an alternative, but not something I'd prefer. I'd LOVE ZDP-189 as I've had it in a Spyderco Endura, but Hitatchi doesn't produce a gigantic amount of it for export, so it might be tricky to consistently get ahold of.
