TwoSun Tuesday: TS338 NightMorning Design with Ti & Micarta Scales & 3.1" D2 Blade
Published: 2 years ago
Well, this thing came on the scene pretty quickly after the TS313 which was TwoSun's first button lock. It's also made by NightMorning, so it does have some similarities. This is big and beefy; a much different design philosophy than Civivi's offerings to date, like the Cogent, Elementum Button lock and Conspirator.
I've dyed the micarta scales purple on this, but they come as tan. A fair bit lighter than their usual brown, so it made a great fit for dyeing.
The button mechanism is the same as the 313, with the cavity milled into the titanium, and multirow bearings. The blade isn't quite as thicc as the 313 though, so it's reigned in just a little bit. It also has the same thumbstuds as the 313... and that's not necessarily a good thing.
This has the cardinal sin of putting the pocket clip with one attachment point into Micarta. Something that the TS263, TS301 and more recently the TS175 have done. It basically makes it a ticking time bomb for a floppy loose clip because Micarta doesn't have the same structural rigidity of other synthetic materials like G10 or carbon fiber.
They really need to stop doing that. All it would take to fix it is to notch out the Micarta from that area altogether, and include a pin below the screw like Wong has done on many of his clips lately. That way, they're secured by more than one point into the Titanium, and prevent the clip from twisting.
Specs:
3.1" D2 blade with 3.8 mm stock thickness
4.26 oz / 121 gram weight
0.64" handle thickness (Ti & Micarta)
Button Lock
Multirow Ceramic bearings & detent ball
