TwoSun Tuesday: TS102-Micarta NightMorning Design in Micarta with 3.06" D2 Blade
Published: 1 year ago
First up, this is the budget version of this knife. There was also a titanium frame lock variant previously, but I don’t own it, and not super interested in acquiring it unless the price is quite cheap.
This thing is a 3-finger grip, unless you can use the finger choil… it’s too small for me like most, so that’s not an option unless I modify it quite a bit. The handle is quite thick to fill the hand, but it’s a bit strange having that without a 4-finger grip. It’s great in a pinch grip, but a standard saber grip feels weird.
The liners have a coating on them. Not sure exactly why as the 420 they use for their liners is fine enough as is. It also doesn’t do the action any favors with the lack of bearing races. The liners and backspacer are proud of the handle scales, but it’s so small that it doesn’t affect the feel in the hand, like the Civivi Elementum and a lot of Azo designs from Kizer.
The blade stock is way thicker than I think it needs to be. The geometry is still decently slicey, but there’s no reason for it to be 3.9 mm thick. And finally, the deep carry clip is put in a very unfortunate location. Something that the framelock won’t have, but it’s pretty uncomfortable.
Overall, I think this knife was much improved with the TS286. Yeah, that’s a Wong design, but it’s much better implemented with a distal taper to the thinner blade, titanium subframe lock and a larger finger choil.
Specs:
3.06" (77.8 mm) D2 blade with 3.9 mm stock thickness
4.04 oz / 114.5 gram weight
0.68" (17 mm) handle thickness (Micarta)
Liner Lock
Ceramic bearings & detent ball
