TwoSun Tuesday: TS171-C Wong Design in Ti & Micarta with 3.81" D2 Blade
Published: 1 year ago
Man, I wanted to like this thing. I was excited about the micarta they used here, and it seems to be a pretty high thread count fabric that they’ve used.
The pocket clip at first glance you might think that it has the secondary post that Wong has done on previous models to mitigate the wear on the micarta, but that didn’t happen. Looks like it could have, but there’s only one central screw on the inside, rather than it being tapped near the top to make room for it.
I do have my nitpicks with it. The thumb paddle for opening isn’t my favorite, and at the very least, I’d appreciate being able to swap it over to the other side, or just include one for each side like most other models do. More often than not, when a knife has an opening method only on one side, it’s to allow the blade to sit further in the handle when closed, but that’s not the case here.
I really do prefer the TS286 over this guy. It is a touch taller, so it takes up a bit more room when closed in the pocket, but it has 14C28N instead of D2, contoured scales (even if it is their older unimpressive micarta) and the blade offers grip that this one lacks, and is distal tapered as well. It’s just a great knife, and very similar to cutting profile that this thing offers.
Specs:
3.81" (96.9 mm) D2 blade with 3.8 mm stock thickness
4.15 oz / 118 gram weight
0.53" (13.5 mm) handle thickness (Ti & Micarta)
Sub-Frame Lock
Ceramic bearings & detent ball
