The 1800's were an active time with the cutlery industry. From companies making shaving implements, pocket knives and fixed blades. Places like Sheffield recognized what was happening in the young country that was the United States and the legend of Jim Bowie. The Western Cutlery Company story and that of several other manufacturers could begin in 1864, the year that Charles W. Platts emigrated from Sheffield, England. Platts was descended from a long line of knife makers and, in turn, his descendants were to have a significant impact upon a number of U.S. cutlery businesses. As Platts moved forward his family would go into, become part of some iconic knife companies such as Case.
Eventually, his descendants would head west to make blades for working people. Boulder Colorado is the place they would eventually land but as things have a way of happening they ended up with Coleman then Camillus and with its closing things were sold off and now is in limbo. Sad to say but at least there still is eBay.
