How to measure Flashlight Lumens and Candela using ANSI/NEMA FL1 standards.
Published: 7 years ago
There are quite few people who have asked me to do a video on how to measure or test flashlight lumens and candela. This is a handy how to video that shows you all the things you need, and how to make a device that sort of mimics and integrating sphere. To measure lumens and candela or (peak beam intensity) on your flashlight, you’ll need a few items. You need to get a lux meter and a ANSI/FL1 rated flashlight, that you have seen other people review and test online. I use a Zebralight SC600w MkIII, and a Fenix LD15. Fenix and Zebralights are good choices, because they seem accurate with their lumens. For my lux meter I use a Dr. Meter lux Meter, with a model # of LX1330B.You can get one here on Amazon, among other places. Dr.Meter LX1330B Digital Illuminance, Light Meter:

You will need some 4” PVS pipe bends and end caps. You can find those, where I did- at Home Depot or lowes.
You’ll also need a scientific calculator and a lux to candela converter like the one at Rapid Tables.

I hope this helps… and while I needed a lit room to show you how this is done in the video- make sure you do all this in a room with as little ambient light as possible.
