The F5.5 is a popular production folding knife that was launched in 2021 as an exclusive collaboration between retailer Urban EDC Supply and renowned Danish custom knifemaker Jesper Voxnaes (Vox Design). The design is based on the highly sought-after, larger custom Vox F5 knife, scaled down to a more compact, everyday carry size.
Key Historical Aspects
Design Inspiration: The F5.5 was inspired by the simple, durable, and versatile nature of a traditional sailor's knife, combined with Voxnaes' signature minimalistic yet functional design language.
Initial Release: The knife was initially offered for pre-order starting in May 2020, with the first deliveries occurring around late 2020/early 2021. The initial pre-order allowed customers to choose between M390 or Elmax blade steel and handle materials like brown micarta, OD green micarta, or full titanium.
Design Features: The knife features a stout 2.7" modified sheepsfoot blade, a sturdy liner-lock mechanism with nested titanium liners, a thumb-hole for deployment, and a functional finger choil. The original production runs were manufactured in China, a common practice for collaborations to offer custom-grade design at a more accessible price point.
Variations and Sprint Runs: Due to its popularity as Urban EDC Supply's best-selling knife, the
F5.5
has been released in numerous exclusive "sprint runs" and variations over the years, featuring different premium materials and finishes. These have included:
Various blade steels such as M390, Elmax, Magnacut, and Vanax.
Handle materials including micarta (brown, green, blue denim, orange paper), bronze, titanium (some with seigaiha wave motifs), and zirconium.
A smaller version, the "Urban EDC Jib" (mini F5.5), has also been released.
Status: Many of the specific configurations are limited editions and are now discontinued, becoming highly sought after on the secondary market. Urban EDC Supply has occasionally re-released popular configurations, such as the brown micarta version, updating them with newer blade steels like Magnacut.
