The Shirogorov 111 with a G10 and Elmax steel configuration was a mid-tech knife prized for its large size, superior flipping action, and balanced "super steel". It was released as a liner lock variant of the famous Shirogorov Model 95 and has since been discontinued.
Features and reputation
Large and lightweight build: The 111 is Shirogorov's largest serialized folder, with a 4.25-inch Elmax drop-point blade. Despite its size, its 3D-machined G10 handles over titanium liners kept its weight down to a manageable 5.5 ounces, allowing it to be a comfortable pocket carry.
Renowned flipping action: Like other Shirogorov knives, the 111 is famous for its smooth, fast, and crisp flipping action. The Elmax and G10 versions, released in the late 2010s, ran on the company's signature Multi Row Bearing System (MRBS).
Premium Elmax steel: The Elmax blade on these 111 models is a high-performance, powder-metallurgy stainless steel known for its balanced properties. It offers an excellent combination of high wear resistance, superior corrosion resistance, toughness, and edge retention.
Mid-tech production: The G10 and Elmax 111 was a "mid-tech" offering from Shirogorov, meaning it was manufactured in a limited, serialized run rather than being a full custom knife. This made it more accessible than their expensive custom pieces but still rare and highly sought after.
History and discontinuation
2019-2020 production: The Elmax and G10 variant was produced for a limited time around 2019 and 2020. Reseller listings show versions from this era in various G10 colors, including light gray, orange, and black.
Shift to M390 and carbon fiber: In later generations, such as the Gen 5 announced in August 2021, the 111 saw changes in materials. New production runs featured different blade steels like M390 and handle materials like carbon fiber.
Replaced by new variants: Like many Shirogorov mid-techs, the Elmax/G10 configuration was an exclusive, finite run. As a result, the knife was discontinued in favor of newer iterations with updated materials and small design tweaks, such as a stepped cutout and a slimmer blade.
Enduring collectibility: Despite being out of production for several years, the Elmax/G10 111 remains a highly sought-after knife on the secondary market due to its combination of materials and its historical place in the Shirogorov lineup.
