Make U.S. Manufacturing Great Again.
In the US Army, units and individual teams are given call signs to avoid giving away identities over enemy radios. The number after the call sign signifies your role within the unit. The number 6 is the command element. In 2003-2004 an elite Army Light Infantry unit, call sign "Scorpion" roamed the mountains of Afghanistan from the northern most high-altitude valleys to the southern inhospitable deserts. This is where the "Scorpion 6" name came from.
The co-owner, Shane Magnussen joined the US Army Infantry before 9/11 with ambitions of going to college for engineering after he left the service. Then, during his deployment to the Sinai Peninsula the United States was attacked on its own soil and he was sent to fight in Operation Enduring Freedom.
After leading a team through 26 successful operations and countless patrols, Shane exited the US Army with an Honorable Discharge and went into the automotive Industry. While in the automotive industry he had the ability to work in all areas from sales, racing, technician, parts, and service. Going to bigger and faster machines he graduated into the aviation field where Shane spent most of his time servicing and managing private jets.
A few more years passed, and Shane started working for a knife manufacturing company. During this time, he learned an overwhelming set of skills from other great craftsmen ranging from grinding to machining to advanced folding knife assembly. After a few years of experience, he wrote and produced a manual for free hand grinding and assembly as well as introduced methods for advanced repair/diagnostics and custom finishing techniques. It was at this pinnacle where Shane decided to branch out on his own, step away from machine-made mass-produced knives and create Scorpion 6 Knives, focusing on the hand made custom enjoyment of knife making.
6 months into Scorpion 6 History, Katie Magnussen joined the team fulltime, doing everything from back office to softening. She also completes over 75% of the machining on all parts, individually, to ensure accuracy and precision in every component. With over 10 years of early childhood education experience behind her, it was an interesting yet exiting transition for Katie that in the end, created the Scorpion 6 Team we have today.
At not even 1 year in business, Scorpion 6 Knives had been entered for multiple national knife awards and was published in the December 2017 issue of Knives Illustrated. They have since been published 6 more times on international prints. You can find Scorpion 6 Knives from the frontlines to the pockets of blue-collar Americans to even an occasional rock star.
For a company that started with equipment bolted to the kitchen table in an 800 square foot apartment to a fully equipped 558 square foot shop, it has been an amazing journey so far.
