DUANE DWYER CUSTOM BBN-M (SNG) RECURVE BOWIE USA
The teak was used on this knife comes from the deck planks of the mighty battleship, the USS California (BB-44). The USS California was actually sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor. However, she was raised, refitted, and put back into service till after the war when she was retired in 1947. Duane, being a history nut, could not pass up the chance to put a true piece of America on a couple of knives. About the BBN-M: Basically, Duane's BBN series is like a SNG with a "bobtail" end. So, it is familiar as the SNG we all know and love, and yet has an entirely new feel. As you can see from the picture below of the BBN-M on top of a SNG, not a ton of material has been actually removed. However, that tiny dimensional change makes the knife feel smaller in the hand. Reverse grip is also enhanced. While in your pocket, it is easier to get your hand in that pocket to get at your other stuff. The Blade: Duane ground a sleek double hollow ground recurve Bowie profile and finished it with a military grade black oxide finish. No jimping on the spine for a super clean look. The Frame: Non lock side of teak from USS California deck plank. Both sides have been ball milled that both gives increased grip and looks dead sexy. All upgraded titanium hardware (pivot, screws, etc.) matte blasted, anodized bronze. Pocket clip can be configure for left or right hand carry. About Carpenter CD Steel: The "CD" stands for "Coin Die" as in the material that strikes coins when minting. This high tech version uses Carpenter's Micro-Melt powdered metal process for uniform carbide distribution. Duane has been talking about getting some of this material for some time and finally has done the first couple pieces with it. CD's claim to fame is its super toughness (ability to resist cracking or breaking) as you can imagine that it would be as it has to strike other metals under high pressure. So think super tough material similar to PD and CPM 3V. And like those materials it has less than the 10.5% chromium required to be called a 'stainless steel' (CD has 8.25% chromium). So you do trade a bit of corrosion resistance for the huge increase in toughness.
