In this video, we’re showcasing two exceptional custom hunting knives by ABS Journeyman Smith Dan Lewis—featuring his signature 5-layer forged “CU Mai” construction.
At first glance, you’ll notice the bold contrast.
But what makes these blades truly special is what’s happening beneath the surface.
What is “CU Mai”?
“CU Mai” is Dan Lewis’ innovative take on traditional San Mai construction.
Instead of standard forge welding, these blades are brazed together at lower temperatures to preserve the integrity of copper—creating a structure that is both visually striking and functionally superior.
Each blade features:
• A W-2 high-carbon steel core for edge retention and strength
• Copper layers on both sides of the core for contrast and uniqueness
• Outer layers of Damascus steel (1095 + 15N25 nickel) for durability and pattern depth
Because copper cannot withstand the higher temperatures used in traditional Damascus forging, this process requires extreme precision and control. The result is a deep, high-contrast etch that highlights every layer with incredible clarity.
