The Sentinel Set: 100+ Hours of Engraving & Inlay | Arik Miller x New West KnifeWorks Media

Published: 2 hours ago

The Sentinel Set is the most time Arik Miller has ever put into a single project. To build it, he first had to learn engraving and inlay and make his own tools. After months of test pieces, he spent at least 100 hours at the pitch bowl and vise, often in 12-hour days, tapping away under magnification.

The blades are forged 1084/15N20 Damascus with koa handles. The set was supposed to have a block until a coworker suggested a stand. The two designed it together and Arik built it. It’s one piece of wood split into four roots between two walnut slabs, with small caps that match each knife’s butt cap so every knife has its slot.

“Functional art, that’s what I like making.” – Arik Miller
