We look at a couple of Spyderco Flippers, The Mantra one and two. These knives boast a plethora of features inside and out but still maintain that classic Spyderco look and feel.
The Mantra one and two fit an impressive amount of features in to a relatively compact package. Both knives feature a handle comprised of two precision-machined solid titanium scales with a no-nonsense stonewashed finish that feels great in the hand. The handle is slick enough where it won’t snag on your pockets on the way out, but offers ample amounts of grip when you need it most. The reverse-side scale on both knives house a sturdy Reeve Integral Lock (R.I.L.) mechanism with a hardened stainless steel interface that also serves as an overtravel stop. The awesome thing about this is that it’s replaceable should it ever become damaged and the knife develop play. A reversible deep-pocket wire clip allows discreet, ambidextrous, tip-up carry, while ensuring the Mantra is always poised for immediate use.
Both knives come with full flat ground CPM M4 Tool Steel blade, which performs well in almost any cutting situation. Where these two knives deviate from one another is the blade shape. The Mantra one features Spyderco’s classic leaf blade shape, coming in at 3.16” in length and 3.0 oz in weight. Opening the knife is satisfyingly snappy with either the trademark Round Hole, Spydie Drop or the flipper, to provide a full spectrum of one-hand opening options. This knife feels great in the hand with small jimping on the thumb ramp and is well balanced for any and all cutting tasks. The pocket clip remains unobtrusive no matter your hold.
The Mantra two’s blade is a bit longer at 3.2” but its lighter 2.8 oz narrow, utilitarian, drop point blade is almost reminiscent of a filet knife. This blade is only accessible via the flipper but feels equally as nice in the hand.
Overall these two new flippers from Spyderco have a lot to offer in terms of state-of-the-art materials, advanced design features and classic Spyderco styling at a great price point.
