This week on Spotlight Series we're checking out the new Amicus Compact from CRKT. As the name suggests, this model takes Danish custom knifemaker Jesper Voxnaes' Amicus design and pares it down, making for a discreet, manageable EDC option.

One of the things you'll notice right up front about the Compact is that it's got a G10 face scale, which lends this a more utilitarian appearance than the full-sized Amicus with its full stainless steel handle. As you can imagine that also combines with the smaller size to leave this feeling much lighter in the hand. Where the original version was 4.75" inches closed with almost 3.5" of blade, the compact is about 4.25" inches closed with an even 3" of blade. It may not sound like a lot, but you can really see the difference when you get the two side-by-side.

Blade deployment here is handled via the ambidextrous thumb hole, which can be used with the thumb, but the easiest method for sure is a quick middle finger flick, just like out on the freeway. It's a nice snappy action that gets the blade out quickly without being too flashy or unwieldy. The compact has a tanto blade that still has a bit of belly, so you're going to get solid slicing performance as well as piercing.

The handle shape fits quite nicely in the hand, with the G10 face scale providing ample grip. There's a run of jimping on the backspacer next to the lanyard hole that facilitates a confident reverse grip, as well. The stainless steel back scale feels nice and smooth against the palm, and provides the knife with a sturdy frame lock. To round out the features we have a stainless steel pocket clip, which offers a nice tight hold, and can be positioned for tip-up or tip-down carry on the right side.

All-in-all, CRKT's Amicus Compact takes the always solid work of Jesper Voxnaes and packs it into a highly portable package, making for a slim, lightweight folder that you can carry with you anywhere.
