For those of you who followed our SHOT Show coverage you know that ZT has announced some exciting new knives for this year and the first of these have just started to arrive here at the knifecenter.
Now the ZT recipe for success is a simple one. Take well thought out and highly functional designs, Throw some of the most premium materials available into the mix and over build them here in the US of A and you have yourself a classic ZT.
First up we have the Tim Galyean designed ZT0022 which has gotten an outsized amount of buzz considering how small it actually us.
This knife is directly aiming at those of you who are looking for a compact daily carry knife that conceals easily without losing the performance and reliability of a true Zero Tolerance. This knife comes in at just under 5 inches in total and the blade length is under 2 which makes it easy to carry this knife almost anywhere. Despite the small size, you can actually get a really firm hold on this knife, it's actually pretty impressive.
You get a solid two and a half finger hold on the knife and the finger grooves really lock the blade into your hands. Some nice jimping on the spine give you a natural place to place you thumb to add some muscle while working with the knife
They didn’t skimp on the materials either. The blade on the 0022 is made from high octane CPM-20CV blade steel and even though it is short the clip point profile gives you plenty of belly to give you enough sharpened edge to use in day to day task. It’s also features a stonewashed finish which is great at hiding scuffs and scratches meaning despite its size this knife has the elements to make it a hard working folder.
Being a ZT, the frame of the knife is exactly what you would expect. The locking side of this knife is made from titanium with a steel lock bar insert in true ZT fashion and presentation scale is made completely of Carbon Fiber. This gives you the best of both worlds in term of vault tight lock up and lightweight feel.
The deployment on this knife is actuated via a flipper tab and it rides on ZT’s KVT bearing system. That along with a very well tuned detent gives this knife some excellent flipping action.
The only thing that I can ding this knife for is not having a deep carry pocket clip. Seems like something that would have gone perfectly to conceal this small frame in your pocket. However the clip is reversible for left or right side carry to fit your preference.
We think this is a wonderful little knife that only proves that big things come in small packages.
The other new knife we have from ZT is the 0393 GLCF. This is a Hinderer-design that debuted in 2018 and is another rock-solid titanium frame locking flipper. What makes this one special is the upgraded inlays. By day they look like ordinary carbon fiber, but by night its true colors are reavealed, and that color is green. It’ll actually glow softly in the dark. This can theoretically help you locate your knife if you drop it at night, but what it is best at is being a conversation starter.
It’s not just a gimmicky item either, as it still has all those ZT hallmarks. We’ve got KVT bearings that make it a great flipper. Like the 0022 we’ve got a couple of finger grooves, and they really lock in your grip here as well.
The blade is CPM-20CV with their Working finish, which is sort of a heavier matte finished version of their stonewash, and Rick Hinderer’s spanto blade shape. It’s a harpoon point design that can transition very well from EDC into tactical roles.
What we really love about this knife is that ZT if giving a special feature that you would imagine being put in their sprint runs of knives but instead have made it widely available by making it a full production piece, which is a really nice nod to their customers.
