Knife 101: Sharpening Choils - KnifeCenter Media
Published: 2 years ago
The Choil: an often-misunderstood feature of knife anatomy intended to allow sharpening the entire length of a blade’s edge. If large enough, this section is called a finger choil, letting the user grip the knife right next to the sharpened edge for additional utility. Some choils (famously Spydercos) don’t actually border the sharpened edge, but they get labeled “finger choils” anyhow. However, if this feature is located solely on the handle, it’s no longer a choil; instead, we call them finger grooves.
