Hawk Knives: From a Teepee to Knife of the Year Media
Published: 8 hours ago
Hawk Knives was started by a gold miner who lived in a teepee. Today they've built the 2026 Knife of the Year and the OTF John Wick carries in Chapter 4.
We're walking through the whole Hawk story, knife by knife. Grant Hawk and his son Gavin started G&G Hawk in the early '90s. Legend has it Chris Reeve told Grant to come back once he'd made a fixed blade, and that turned into years of mentorship and the Chris Reeve Ti-Lock, the 2010 BLADE Show Overall Knife of the Year.
From there: the D.O.G., the E.T., the R.A.M., the MUDD, and designs built by CRKT, Kershaw, ZT and Buck. Then the Deadlock, the OTF that raised the bar with zero blade play. The Shortcut, the utility-blade flipper you can't find anymore. And the Talon Automatic, which just won Overall Knife of the Year and Best Automatic at BLADE Show 2026.
We also take you inside the Hawk compound in Idaho City, Idaho: an old logging cabin shop on about 30 acres, where most of the crew lives on site and everyone can run every machine.
