Meet the designer E2 Craig Powell: Yacare Media

Published: 1 year ago

In this episode, we are excited to introduce Craig Powell, the creative force behind the design of the Yacare Machete and the General Manager at TOPS Knives. Inspired by his visit to the Costa Rican Jungle, Craig has managed to bring a unique touch to the world of knife design through the Yacare Machete, which stands as a testament to his vision and creativity.

Jungle expeditions have often served as a rich source of inspiration for TOPS Knives designs, with examples such as the Brakimo and Tanimboca Puukko. The Yacare Machete is the latest addition to this series, crafted to meet the unique demands of the jungle environment.

Craig first encountered machetes of a similar style during a trip to Costa Rica, where he saw them being used by locals and featured in decorative pieces. The design of these machetes shared some similarities with barong-styled blades but had a distinct flair that set them apart from the typical Central American machetes. This unique style captured Craig's imagination, and his experience on the Bushcraft Global trip in 2015 further cemented his desire to design a machete of his own.

Despite not considering himself a knife designer, Craig's passion for the project led him to collaborate closely with Leo Espinoza, the owner of TOPS Knives, to bring the Yacare Machete to life. With Leo's guidance, Craig transformed his vision into a design that seamlessly fits within the TOPS lineup.
