Carving Tip: Oblique Cut for Thinning and Shaping Details Media
Published: 1 month ago
Welcome to the Morakniv Carving School! In this video, our colleague Mikael shows you one of the classic and basic carving grips – perfect for improving your control and technique when carving.
Today’s technique: Oblique Cut
Hold the knife at an angle across the wood and slice diagonally through the fibers. This allows the edge to glide smoothly through the wood, giving you a clean and controlled cut. Always keep the thumb you're cutting against positioned below the cutting surface, so the blade passes safely above the thumb.
This technique is perfect for thinning material or shaping detailed areas where you need both precision and a smooth finish.
