Wood Carving Basics: Pull Cut Toward Thumb Explained Media

Published: 6 days ago

Welcome to the Morakniv Carving School! In this video, our colleague Mikael shows you one of the classic and basic carving grips – perfect for improving your control and technique when carving.

Today’s technique: Pull Cut Toward Thumb
Hold the knife handle firmly with your fingers and use only your fingers to pull the blade toward the wood. At the same time, place your thumb against the workpiece to act as a support and brake, helping you control the movement.

Always position your thumb below the cutting line, so the blade safely passes above the thumb when the knife exits the cut.

This technique takes some practice but gives you excellent control, especially when working on small details or tight areas.
