Hook Knife Basics: Pull Cut Toward Thumb for Safe Bowl Carving Media
Published: 1 week ago
Welcome to the Morakniv Carving School! In this video, our colleague Mikael shows you one of the classic and basic carving grips – perfect for improving your control and technique when carving.
Today’s technique: Pull Cut Toward Thumb with Hook Knife
This is a precise but advanced technique, so always use it with care. Hold the knife firmly and use your fingers to pull the blade toward your thumb while guiding the cut into the wood. Your thumb acts as a support and brake, giving you control over the movement.
It’s very important to place your thumb below the cutting line, so the blade safely passes above your thumb as the knife exits the wood.
This grip offers excellent control when carving detailed, hollow areas, like the inside of a spoon bowl. Since you're only using your fingers and thumb to pull the knife, it requires good strength in your hand and forearm.
