Hook Knife Basics: Master the Thumb Push Grip Media
Published: 1 week ago
Welcome to the Morakniv Carving School! In this video, our colleague Mikael shows you one of the classic and basic carving grips – perfect for improving your control and technique when carving.
Today’s technique: Thumb Push Cut - with a Hook Knife
Use the thumb of your supporting hand to push on the back of the blade, close to the handle. On our Hook Knife 164, this part of the blade is intentionally left unsharpened, giving you a safe place to apply pressure with your thumb. Push the blade through the wood in a smooth, controlled motion, while the hand holding the knife guides the direction and controls the cutting depth. This technique gives you extra stability and is perfect for shaping hollow areas, like the inside of spoons or bowls.
