THE FLOOD KHUKURI- PROGRESS UPDATE Media
Published: 9 hours ago
We've had a few people checking in on the progress of this very special blade so here goes!
We listened to all of the community feedback & saw a strong split between people that wanted us to do a traditional kothimora & those who wanted us to push the envelope with modern options and micarta processes in particular. The final spec is trying to hit a little bit of both.
On the traditional side we're aiming for a classy & subdued colour scheme of glossy black & polished silver along with a hidden tang handle. On this blade we're doing experimental hand polishing to try & keep the most crisp fuller lines possible & overcome some of the issues related to limited grits in nepalese grinders. A first here is the bolster material- this blade features a sterling silver bolster making it the first knife Kailash has ever made in precious metals :)
On the modern side though we have gone with a very special black micarta handle material that is impregnated with silvery metal flakes that have been hand filed in the workshop. Right now the blade is at a high satin finish but when we bring this up to the highest polish we can this thing will look like the night sky :)
The development of this handle material is a big part of why this project faced delays. There was a lot of trial & error & filing the metal was slow. It added about 2.5 weeks to the build & after that we've been held up by the silver bolster which needed to be made externally by a craftsman who was too busy to get it done in the weeks before the festival season- we only received it at the start of this week. The workshop is now closed for Tihar & so works have paused for a week- plenty of time for the next round of community consultation!
-Right now the blade has a placeholder handle ring. What shape do you think we should go for on this blade?
-Do you think we should do some handle carving on this blade or leave it plain to let the handle material shine? Do you think some silvery metal inlay in the handle carving could be good or will it make the blade too loud?
- Do you think we should include makers marks on the blade? Or keep it clean & move them to the back of the handle?
Thankyou all for your patience and we're excited to get the final product in front of you to draw soon :)
