Knifemaking Tuesdays Week 14 - Finished blade in RWL34 Media

Published: 12 years ago

Got a long video for you this week! If you're impatient and just want to see the finished result, skip to 36:48.

I made one more test blade to confirm lock and stop pin tolerances then moved right onto making a finished blade from high quality Swedish RWL34 blade steel. Of course it ends up with several problems but I learned what not to do next time. Once these issues are fixed I am confident that the blade will be AWESOME! Throughout the video I broke $everal cutting tool$ and spend a good bit in the middle explaining how I use the GWizard Calculator for figuring out my machining speeds and feeds.

Overall, I'm getting there. I wrote a whole page of "fix-it" notes while making this blade, so the next one will go much smoother, I have a similar page for my titanium handles. I also have to finish making my spacers and threaded barrel nuts, shorten and contour the pivot pins, make the thumb stud, and figure out a pocket clip. I think I will 3D machine a really cool pocket clip instead of using an off the shelf unit, which could take an entire day by itself to design and test. With any luck maybe I can have a perfect knife within 2-3 weeks.
