Ferric Chloride dissolving a steel detent ball Media
Published: 12 years ago
This is a quick update to my week 14 knifemaking tuesday video series. After less than a day of flipping and playing with my first semi-successful Norseman, it broke! The detent ball sheared in half, mostly due to the big dents in the blade from a machining mistake. This video shows the process I went through to remove the ball, first trying muriatic acid and failing, then ferric chloride which worked great. I didn't get an after video but you'll have to use your imagination and see an empty hole where the ball used to be. A new ball pressed in fine and after smoothing out the dent in the blade with a dremel it flips great now!
