Tools For Making Knives - Arbor Press
How To Remove Bow From Blade Steel.
In this video knife maker Gillian shows how to use the arbor press. The Arbor press can be a great tools for making knives, as it can be a great time saver. The maker shows how to remove bow from blade steel, using a 2 ton arbor press, and a surface plate. It is important to remember to de-bur the bar stock when straightening blade steel, so that you don’t get a false reading on the surface plate. After any operation (drilling, cutting, machining...ect) in the blade steel, a burr will be formed. It is necessary to remove this burr, as it will give you a false reading on your surface plate. The fastest and easiest way to do this is with a bastard file, and a scotch-brite wheel, mounted on a buffer. After the blade steel burs have been removed, an arbor press can be used to remove bow from the blade steel. It is also important that you cushion the blade steel, on softer materials, and also that you prevent the arbor press from damaging the blade steel by putting dents into the metal. These arbor press modifications are easy to make using pieces of leather, with zip-ties. It takes time to learn how to take the bow out of steel, using this method. Trial and error, on how much pressure should be used, but over time you gain experience and a feel for how hard you need to pull on the handle. Once you know how to take the bow out of steel, using an arbor press, you can use this method to save you precious time.
