The name Market Skinner was the professional name given to the men whose job it was to skin, quarter and preserve the meat being supplied to the large commercial consumers such as the Railroads, cities up and down America’s river ways and across the territories and states of the young American Union.
Professional Hunters called Market Hunters, would supply game to them often numbering in the hundreds or even thousands of animals that needed processing on a weekly basis.
Their job required the tools of both professional skinners and butchers plying their trade from sun up to sun down across the western states as the fledgling nation moved ever westward into new un-hunted territory.
Their main tool above all others was their knife, a knife that could do all the things needed to complete their job, quickly, cleanly and efficiently. I am lucky to have several of those “early” knives in my collection.
The Emerson market Skinner is a modern version of the knives used by those professional game butchers so many years ago. To do their job, the knife had to be strong, tough, easily sharpened and ergonomically designed for hours of laborious chores. The Emerson Market Skinner fulfills all of those roles and more in a design (if they had used folders in those days) that any of those men would have wanted.
For the modern Hunter, from the biggest game down to the smallest quarry, this Emerson hunting knife is one you could confidently use anywhere your hunt takes place.
I’ve been a hunter all my life so I know what a good hunting knife should do. Better yet, I know that those Market Skinners knew way more than me about what their knife should do. And that’s what I used as my model. See for yourself.
The Market Skinner is the latest Signature Series model to grace the category. Each blade is hand-signed and serialized. Featuring tan G-10 handles with an embedded “Signature Series” coin. The Market Skinner features all satin hardware and a conventional V-Grind with our signature chisel edge. For the modern hunter from the biggest game down to the smallest quarry, this hunting knife is one you could confidently use anywhere your hunt takes place.
