field knife demo Media

This is a field knife I make. This is a new pattern geared towards cutting performance.

It has a 4 5/8" blade, it's made of 3/16" Latrobe A2, it's sharpened 15 degrees per side, it weighs 8 ounces.

The heat treat is a little faster and goes a little colder than a standard HT for A2 to reduce forming unwanted structures created by decomposing RA by reducing it in the first place. Where tools like stamping dies may want to emphasize dimensional stability, this tweak's emphasis on homogeneity improves edge stability and reduces the tendency to be chippy at higher hardness. The combination of high hardness and homogenous structure supports a thinner edge without being fragile. So it cuts well and holds an edge.

This design was a collaboration with Lorien Arnold. This knife is intended to be a reliable working tool for folks who carry and use fixed blade knives in the field.
