Atlas 618 Lathe Drive Train Upgrade - Multi Groove Pulleys Media
Published: 1 week ago
Upgrade the original Deep V pulleys to modern multi groove J style pulleys. Maintained the original gear from the original pulley and pressed that into some fresh aluminum to cut the new multi groove pulleys. Also made a Jack Shaft and Motor pulley to match.
The original cast pulley on this Atlas 618 Lathe has metric dimensions, while the rest of the shaft and drive train were standard dimensions. Full dimensioned drawings included in case you want to build this project.
With worn parts it can be hard to measure the original sizing, I was able to figure out that the original drive pin bolt circle on this pulley was 41.5mm and the drive pin is 6.5mm very close to standard sizes of 1.624" and .250" so easy to get it wrong. But the shaft the pulley fit on was clearly 20mm dia so finally figured out it was all metric sizing.
Here is another video that has more detail for cutting the J Pulley grooves and sharpening the tooling - https://youtu.be/vZ4AnZFlMfw
Machining done on a Precision Matthews PM 1440TL Lathe, Tormach 1100MX and Jet manual Mill Drill.
Thanks for watching.
