Motor Swap On A 6x12 Surface Grinder - Grizzly 5963 Media
Published: 2 years ago
After messing up the wiring and smoking this new motor, I figured I would show the process to remove and re-install the new motor on this 6x12 Surface Grinder. Mine is a Grizzly model 5963 but this casting and design is used on many different brands of 6x12 Surface Grinders.
These Permanent Split Capacitor (PSC) motors seem to be good quality, but the instructions say not to move any of the wires during the 115V to 230V conversion, which is only true if they put the wires in the correct place from the factory. Because there are jumpers, the wires can go in a couple of different places, and when you change to 230V you may have to move some wires to correct their location after moving the jumpers. You can see the full details of the wiring issue on another video on my channel.
Grizzly customer service and warranty department was very helpful and accommodating providing a replacement motor.
All wiring should be completed by a certified electrician and I am not a certified electrician. Use of this information and any wiring you complete should be done by or supervised by a certified electrician.
Thanks for watching, I hope this helps if you need to swap out the motor on your surface grinder, if you do, I hope your swap was after many years of use and grinding and not just 90 seconds of run time.
